The Wickham Horse Fair
The Wickham Horse Fair took place today. It’s been held almost every year since 1269, tucked away in a Hampshire village that doesn’t seem the most likely place to hold one of the biggest events in the Traveller community calendar. I visited the fair last year as part of my research for The Bridleway. It was a fascinating day, challenging my own prejudices whilst showing me a glimpse of a world that is so often hidden from view. I later interviewed writer Damian Le Bas and poet Raine Geoghegan, both of whom are rooted in Traveller heritage and shared experiences of their culture with me.
