Aw I know this feeling well. It’s tough. But actually you’ve just done a really good thing for the climate movement right there just by talking about it publicly and saying that you’re worried. They say that when 25% of the public are outwardly showing their concern about an issue it creates a positive tipping point where the right kind of political changes start being made so that seems doable and you’ve definitely been contributing towards that ☺️ I recently joined the group Parents for Future and I would really recommend you check them out

https://parentsforfuture.org.uk

It is such a lovely and supportive group and I’ve found that taking some climate action has really helped to manage my anxiety, but it’s all at a very manageable level and there’s absolutely no pressure to do anything at all if you’re not in a space where you can manage it but even things like amplifying climate related social media posts is really helpful. Nobody is a perfect environmentalist, it’s literally impossible in this society but what we need is everyone to be an imperfect environmentalist and that will help move us forward! Thanks for this post. And your pumpkins look amazing!

I hear you loud and clear. It's so difficult isn't it? If I feel really down about all this I read a bit of Rebecca Solnit, although if I'm honest I sometimes feel she's a bit too the other way. The world is incredibly complex and all we can do is all we can do - sometimes it's really only small things and sometimes we are limited by circumstances but I think, thinking about this and keeping intention goes a long way. And there's nothing wrong with comforting yourself because we need that to keep going!

I hear you, Tiff. I feel the same. We are currently looking at solar panels for the house. I'd love to grow more of my own food and just generally consume less. It's hard to break the training of a lifetime but one step at a time we can get there and as Eve said, you're speaking up and you care, that is so important!

Those with children have to do more and speak up to change the ways we behave in the world. Education, education, education...and leading by example! From what you have written it seems to me you are doing all the right things but it has fallen on your generation to stand up just as two World Wars caught other generations in impossible situations and choices.

Grace and beauty indeed. These unquantifiables are very real and the stuff of religions going back 000s of years...Caring for the soul.

PS. We are so lucky to be born in the most beautiful country in the world - it always needs saying and you say it with your books and this blog! Thank you.

Yes to this feeling. It’s constant these days. I’m also in the days of potty training and small-child parenting though so I feel this definitely linked to the feeling of overwhelm 😆 but like you say, focusing on the tiny things is sometimes all you can do. This summer has been cool and lovely 👍🏻 There are hazelnuts on the tree outside my window and blackberries in the garden 👍🏻 You’re successfully growing pumpkins 🎃 (the one you moved will be fine). And you’re not alone in feeling like this which means we are all very, very ready for change and talking about it on platforms like this rather than worrying about it quietly on our own is good 💫 Apologies for the excessive emojis but I felt they might be helpful!

All of this. I see your Mail-reading neighbour and raise you the man down the road with the lovely big husky our dogs have always loved (yay!) but who will corner you like the Ancient Mariner with tales of how climate change is a woke conspiracy, and the latest tosh he's heard on the Jordan Peterson podcast (triple boo!!). It's all so unnerving. Or, it's not, depending on how much of a selfish pillock you are. Meanwhile, we have pumpkins and blackberries and it looks like the apples will be good this year. Xx
